Equal Pay Selfie contest winner urges women to Speak Up & Ask for more!

Meera Kaul Foundation, along with the Parity- Gender Bias Rank App launched an online awareness campaign and contest to express solidarity with the global Equal Pay Day on April 14th.

The contest involved posting a 'selfie wearing red', with a message in support of the Equal Pay. Dr Bina Rabadia, a Specialist Dermatologist in a private hospital in Dubai, was the winner of the contest, who received a 3D printer worth USD1500, courtesy Jacky's Business Solutions.

Bina expressed her happiness, both at winning the contest as well as for such initiatives that helped highlight workplace gender discrimination faced by women worldwide. "For women, this (Gender discrimination) is an everyday challenge. Pay inequality based on gender is unjust and unfair. And I think it is only a mindset issue, that can be changed by raising awareness as well as by women taking on the courage to speak up, negotiate and ask for what is rightfully theirs. I urge all women to insist for right pay!" added Bina.

With current global statistics on female full-time workers making only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men, the gender wage gap of 22 percent is expected to reach pay parity for women only after 44 years. And the situation is not better for the region.

Speaking on the occasion, chairperson Meera Kaul stated, "Change is possible and successful women themselves can serve as role models and the 'social vaccine' that can inspire other women, and help change society's gender metrics".
